    In Chicago, U.S., Cynthia Rowley was born on July 29, 1958 (age 63). Her hometown is Barrington, Illinois, a northwestern suburb of Chicago. It was Ed Rowley, a former science teacher, and his wife Clementine, a painter, who gave birth to three children. At age seven, Rowley made her first dress. A painter and the designer of the Pabst Blue Ribbon logo were among her grandparents.

    After graduating from Barrington High School, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1981. In her junior year, Rowley was disqualified from the SAIC art show for her use of wings in her design. While Rowley was still a student at SAIC, Marshall Field’s bought her first collection.

    Career

    While a senior in high school, Rowley won a SAIC fellowship award and moved from Chicago to New York City with the money. One of her grandmothers then gave her $3,000 in seed money to start her career.

    The Rowley brand has evolved over the years to include women’s wear, handbags, glasses, color cosmetics, fragrances, wetsuits and swimwear, home furnishings, bedding, and office accessories.

    In 2003, she introduced at Target an accessory line based on a book series she wrote with friend Ilene Rosenzweig. Mr. Powers, Rowley’s husband, was memorialized in 2011 with the Mr. Powers collection.

    Fashion week in New York presents Rowley’s fashions on a biannual basis. Among Cynthia Rowley’s signature stores are New York City, Chicago, Montauk, Palm Beach, Malibu, Pacific Palisades, and Newport Beach, as well as its website.

    New York Times described Rowley’s designs as “flirty, vibrant garments in wispy fabrics” reminiscent of Claire McCardell’s carefree, easy elegance.

    Awards

    Rowley received a Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent in 1994 from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Rowley and her husband Bill Powers were both honored with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Legend of Fashion award in 2012. During the 37th Annual American Apparel and Footwear Association American Image Awards, Rowley won the Designer of the Year award.

    The seasoned television personality has appeared as a judge on reality shows 24 Hour Catwalk, America’s Next Top Model, Project Runway, and Design Star, as well as appearing on The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Gossip Girl, and Celebrity Jeopardy, among others. Ex-Amish Kate Stoltzfus interns at Rowley’s design company in Return to Amish, a TV series on the TLC network.

    Husband

    She married Tom Sullivan, a photographer who died of cancer at the age of 32 in 1994. Her daughter Kit Keenan was born in 1999, after she married Brooklyn sculptor William Keenan Jr. In 2018, Kit launched a clothing line called KIT. Cynthia and Kit teamed up to start the Ageless podcast in 2019. She appeared on The Bachelor in 2021, where she alluded to having an influential mother. After Rowley and Keenan Jr. divorced, she married William “Bill” Powers, an art dealer, writer, and owner of the Half Gallery in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, on September 17, 2005, at the residence of photographer Peter Beard.
