In recent years, there has been a rise in domestic abuse cases all over the world. If your loved one has been a victim of domestic violence, you might not have a clue on how to help them or support them. The victims of such violence may feel lonely, isolated and filled with hopelessness and fear. Sometimes letting them know that you care for them can give them a sense of hope and enough power to stand up for themselves.

    1. Make Time for Them

If you are trying to reach out to an abuse victim, do it during a time of calm circumstances. Getting involved in their matters when the tempers are rising and there is a fight going on might do more harm than good. Make sure to take plenty of time aside in case the victim decides to open up. If the victim discloses pent-up anger and frustration, you should try not to worry about your other commitments. So make time for the victim to listen to them in a relaxed state of mind.

    1. Start a Conversation

Sometimes victims of domestic abuse do not want to reach out in fear that things might get worse if their abuser finds out. If they do not want to talk, try to start a conversation on your own. These might be little sentences but sometimes such small assurances can make a world of difference to the victim. Start by saying, “I’m worried for you” or “I’m concerned about your safety” or “Are You alright?”, “How are you feeling?”

If you notice any person becoming unusually quiet and withdrawn or covering their bruises with clothing try to talk to them. Let the victim know that you will be discreet if they disclose any information. Just let them know that you are available whenever they want to talk.

    1. Learn the Warning Signs

Many people try to cover up their abuse just because they don’t want to seek attention. Learn these signs of abuse and be alert in case someone shows such signs. Learning these signs, reaching out to the victim of abuse and convincing them to consider therapy might help them change their life for good.
