Lingokids 40m Series, an edtech startup that offers a “playlearning” platform of educational games for kids ages 2-8, has raised $40 million in a series C funding round led by Japanese conglomerate SoftBank.
Founded in 2013, lingokids 40m Series’ app aims to make learning English fun and engaging for young children through a mix of songs, stories, and games. The app is available for free with some premium features (such as unlimited playtime) available through monthly or annual subscription plans.
With its latest injection of capital, Lingokids says it will continue to invest in content and technology while also expanding its footprint internationally. The startup currently has over 10 million registered users in 190 countries, but the majority of its users are based in Spain, where the company is headquartered.
“We want to be everywhere English is being learned as a second language,” said co-founder and CEO Alex Salcedo in an interview with VentureBeat.
While Lingokids offers a freemium model, Salcedo said that the vast majority of its users (85 percent) are on the free tier. The company has been profitable since 2017, but Salcedo said it is reinvesting its profits back into the business to fuel growth.
So far, Lingokids has raised $63 million from investors including SoftBank, GSV Ventures, Reach Capital, Owl Ventures, and Accel Partners. With its latest round of funding, the startup is now valued at $300 million.
